I completed this project at the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak in the United States in April of this year. I posted it online at that time, but I deleted it after that month because it is supposed to be a real-time map, but I was busy with my final thesis project, and I didn’t have time to update the data. The data used in the current map is dated to April 22nd, and the situation in the East coast of the U.S. was relatively serious at that time. Changes in the size of the circle are used to indicate the increase in cases. All states start from the same size point, and this point gets bigger and bigger with the increasing number of confirmed cases. Therefore, the points in the U.S. on the East have expanded very quickly. During the expansion, I added the sound effect of people breathing through a ventilator. In April, all walks of life in the United States did not pay attention to the rapid deterioration of this epidemic. People were still doubting if we need masks. I want to use this map to draw people’s attention to the epidemic with the expanding circles and scary sounds.
This map is directly connected to the data of two Excel tables. When we update the data in the table, the map will automatically change accordingly, and the expanding process of the circle will also change accordingly, so we can easily update this visual map in real time.
